The 297 Clay Condominiums located in Historic Downtown Muskegon are steeped in history. Originally built in 1926 as the YMCA at a cost of over $2 million, the building was given a new lease on life in the 1980s when it was converted to condominiums. The building entry doors are equipped with an electronic key system and video monitoring. The six units on the first floor may be either residential or commercial use, while the 31 units on floors two through four are exclusively for residential use. There are several different floor plans in the building, including many two-level units. There are one and two bedroom units with one or two bathrooms. Most units have working wood-burning fireplaces. Where possible, original historic characteristics of the building have been preserved (including the 20 x 60 foot heated indoor swimming pool) and co-mingled with modern conveniences. Several units have been recently renovated, which is encouraged by the Owners Association.
